How do I combine scanned pages into one PDF?

If an essay is more than one page, it’s necessary to upload it as a single PDF file. Both Windows and macOS have built-in tools that make this easy, and there are also free alternatives.

On Windows

  • Windows Scan can save each page as a PDF or image.
  • To combine pages into one PDF, you can use the free Microsoft Print to PDF option:

  1. Select all the scanned pages.
  2. Right-click and choose Print.
  3. In the Printer dropdown, select Microsoft Print to PDF.
  4. Save the output as a single file.

For more details, see Microsoft’s guide: Install and use a scanner in Windows

It has come to our attention that Microsoft Print to PDF may be missing from some versions of Windows 11. We will update this article with alternative suggestions shortly.

On macOS

  • The built-in Preview app lets you scan directly from most printers and also combine PDFs:

  1. Open the first scanned page in Preview.
  2. Go to Edit > Insert > Page from File… to add more pages.
  3. When all pages are added, choose File > Export as PDF.

Free alternatives

If you prefer, you can use free apps such as:

  • Adobe Scan (iOS/Android) – scans with your phone and creates multi-page PDFs automatically.
  • Microsoft Lens (iOS/Android) – also free, with auto-trimming and PDF export.

Once you have one clean PDF file for the entire essay, you can upload it to EssayGrader as usual.

Please note that we are unable to offer official support for applications other than EssayGrader. Please contact the company that provides third party software (e.g., Microsoft, Apple, Adobe, etc.) to obtain official support for their products.
