Step 9 - Import essays from your LMS

Import essays from your LMS


Whether you are using Google Classroom, Canvas, or Schoology, once linked with EssayGrader the process of importing essays is identical. The steps below demonstrate the process of importing essays from your Learning Management System (LMS).


  1. On the Home screen, select one of the three LMS import options under Import Student Submissions. You may be asked to login to your LMS again.



The first time you upload submissions from your LMS you will go through the process of linking it to EssayGrader. If you need to link your LMS to EssayGrader, you can find instructions in one of the following help articles:



  1. Once the linking process is complete, you will be presented with the first of 2 screens. On the first, you will be asked to select the class from which you wish to import and, once selected, the assignment for that class that contains the essays.



  1. Once the class and assignment dropdowns have been selected, the list of essays available to be imported will show up below. You can select all or some of these.


Google Classroom Tips!

  • Only submissions with a Turned In status can be imported into EssayGrader
  • Submission must be in Google Docs format in order to be imported (PDF, Word, etc. are currently unsupported to import from Classroom)
  • Only one file per student per assignment will be shown in the import list, even if multiple files have been submitted by the student—generally it's the first in the list in Classroom that will be available for import


To import essays whose Turned In status has been changed in Google Classroom, these will have to be unsubmitted by the students, resubmitted, and then turned in again so that the Turned In status is correctly applied.


  1. Select Continue: Grading Setup at the bottom of the page to move on to the 2nd import screen.



  1. This next step involves selecting a variety of settings that drive some of the AI's grading behavior and the style and language of the feedback report that is produced. You have the following options to set:


Student Level

This reflects the acadmic level of the students whose work is being graded and will default to the level assigned to the rubric. You can change it, however, if you so choose.


Language

You can set both the input and output languages here, but the default assumes that both are the same. The options you have are UK, USA, and Australian English, as well as Spanish and French.


If you wish to produce a feedback report that is in a different language than the essay (e.g., a Spanish essay but an English report), then then uncheck the box below the language options that says 'Your output language is the same as input language' and choose a new output language from the selections that appear below.


Feedback Detail Level

Do you want the AI to create a report with feedback that is more wordy or less so with respect to explanations provided. Your options here are Detailed, Medium, and Short.


Grading Intensity

While the scoring criteria are most importantly set in the rubric itself, you can instruct the AI to apply those criteria in an Easy, Normal, or Strict manner by selecting a grading intensity option.


Custom Instructions (optional)

Custom instructions add extra context or criteria for grading that aren't as well suited to the rubric. You might be dealing with students who struggle with language and you only want feedback to focus on content and not grammar. You could indicate that here.


Another example might be a situation where you want the AI to use specific language, like referring to the assignment as a paper rather than an essay. You could specify that here. You could also reference source material considerations here, although this can also be provided in the custom instructions section in the Create Source Material screen.


  1. Click the Start grading button at the bottom right of the screen to begin the import and grading process.


You've set the AI up for success and now you can sit back as it evaulates how successful your students have been. Isn't technology grand!?


It may take just a few seconds or up to a couple of minutes to grade the essays you've selected, so be patient. Once it has finished, the software will take you back to the assignment screen where you will now see a populated list of essays and their feedback reports ready to review.


In the essay list you will see the status of essays being graded. While still in a Queued status you will not be able to interact with that essay (e.g., rename it, etc.). If an essay has a Grading Failed status, you may hover over the status for a tool tip explaining why grading has failed.
