Step 13 - Export grading feedback (printed copies and digital PDF)
Export grading feedback (printed copies and digital PDF)
If you have manually created a workspace and are not connected to a supported LMS like Google Classroom, Canvas, or Schoology (coming soon), then your option for returning grading results to your students is to produce a digital or printed copy of the report and provide it to them.
The 90 second demo in our Video Tutorial section outlines the process for both digital exports and exports back to your LMS. We cover these in this current article and the next two. So, if you need more detail, make sure to check out the content in Steps 14 and 15 as well. Continue reading to begin this multi-part overview of exporting feedback.
Exporting the feedback report is done from either of two locations – the essay list on the assignment page and from within the feedback report itself. The option to export is found within the three dot menu on each.
- on the far right of the essay within the essay list
- towards the top right corner of the feedback report

You may also select the essay in the list by checkmarking the empty box to the left of the essay. A new menu item will appear in the top bar that says Export.

With only one essay selected, both PDF and Export as one single PDF file in that menu will export the feedback report for that essay. Selecting multiple essays from the list will result in a bulk export. Please see the Export feedback reports in bulk to PDF help center article for more information on bulk exports.
Printing the feedback report
- Navigate to the report you wish to print by clicking on the essay from the Essay Dashboard on the assignment page.
- Select the Actions menu button toward the top right corner of the report.
- Select Print from the menu. This will open the print dialogue for your browser or operating system.
- Print as you normally would from your computer/device.
Exporting the report to PDF
- Find the report you wish to export in the essay list on the assignment page.
- Select your export method:
- using the three dot menu to the far right of the essay within the list

- using the Actions menu button toward the top right corner of the report (if you have opened the report from the essay list)

- using the Export menu that appears when you select the essay by checking the empty checkbox to the left of the list item (if you have selected more than one essay in the list, choosing PDF will export each as it's own file, whereas choosing Export as one single PDF file will batch all the selections together into one PDF).

- Select Export to PDF from any of these three locations. This will open a window with options for exporting. The options available are as follows:

Option | What it includes in the exported PDF | Use when… |
|---|---|---|
Annotations | The student’s submission pages with your highlights, callouts, or markup. If you didn’t add any, the clean submission is still included. | You want students to see mark-ups on their actual pages. |
Feedback report | The narrative feedback summary (plus rubric section summaries). With Hide grades, scores are omitted but written feedback stays. | You need a readable summary of strengths, areas to improve, and next steps. |
Writing report | The writing mechanics report (grammar, usage, style) with issue lists and suggested fixes. | You want a detailed, line-item view of writing issues and suggestions. |
Comments | Any inline or overall comments you added, collected into the PDF. | You left specific notes you want captured in the export. |
Hide grades | Suppresses rubric scores/points in the export. Narrative feedback and comments remain. | You’re sharing feedback without revealing grades (e.g., draft reviews). |
Notes
- You can combine options (e.g., Annotations + Comments, or Feedback report + Hide grades).
- Hide grades only changes what appears in the exported PDF. It doesn’t delete scores in EssayGrader itself.
Common combinations
- Quick narrative only: Feedback report + Hide grades
- Marked-up pages: Annotations + Comments
- Writing focus: Writing report (optionally add Comments)
- Everything: Annotations + Feedback report + Writing report + Comments + Grades
- Once you've selected or deselected the options you want to include or exclude, Click Export to create and download the PDF. You will see a success message when the export is complete.
