Step 12 - Regrade essays (entire assignment or single submission)

Regrading essays (entire assignment or single submission)

There may be a number of reasons you wish to regrade essays, whether it's every essay submitted for a particular assignment or just the work of one or more students. The demo in our Video Tutorials section outlines the steps to regrade all submissions in an assignment. To regrade individual submissions they must be processed individually. Continue reading for more detail on this process.

Please note: Selecting Edit & Regrade will regrade every submission attached to an assignment and will replace the feedback report with a fresh copy. This means that any review, edits, and comments you've made will be overwritten. Please be sure that you are not losing important custom feedback by regrading.

Regrading all essays in an assignment

If you wish to regrade every essay that has been submitted to date for a particular assignment, the steps are as follows.

  1. Identify the workspace in the sidepanel where your class and assignment are located.

  1. Navigate to the assignment you wish to regrade. You may need to expand folders within the structure to find the correct assignment (you may also select the folders to open them within the main window, once they are shown there).

  1. Click the Edit and Regrade button in the top right of the assignment window. This will open the grading settings panel.

  1. Review the grading settings and make changes as you wish. Options include:

Regrading settings

Editable options include:

  • the Rubric used for grading
  • Rerence material and writing prompt
  • the Student Level
  • the assignment Language(s) (leave the checkbox checked if both input and output languages are the same)
  • the Feedback Detail Level
  • the Grading Intensity
  • Flexible scoring on or off under the Advanced Rules
  • any Additional Grading Instructions

For a detailed discussion of the grading settings, please review the Set up your first assignment – Source material and grading settings help center article.

  1. Click Save & Regrade to begin the regrading process and return to the assignment window and essay list.

  1. Review the feedback reports (discussed in detail in the Review the feedback report article in the help center).

Regrading a single assignment

There are two ways to regrade an individual assignment.

Regrading from the essay list

  1. Find the assignment you wish to regrade.

  • Scroll through the list
  • Use the search field
  • Use filters to narrow down the list

  1. Click the three dots to the far right of the essay to bring up the dropdown menu.

  1. Select Regrade from the dropdown menu

  1. Review the grading settings for the assignment in the window that opens (as above). The options are almost the same as the Edit & Regrade settings screen but do not include the rubric or reference materials as configurable options. This is because these items must be applied consistently to all essays and can not be changed for an individual regrading.

  1. Either click Regrade to proceed with regrading the assignment, or select Close to return to the assignment and essay list without saving any changes to the settings.

Regrading from the feedback report

The only difference between the process of regrading from the essay list and from the feedback report is the fact that you have already selected an essay for review and are regrading from the report window.

  1. Click on the Regrade button towards the top right of the report.

  1. Review the grading settings for the assignment in the window that opens. These settings are identical to those that appear when regrading from the essay list and are described in the previous section.

  1. Either click Regrade to proceed with regrading the assignment, or select Close to return to the feedback report without saving any changes to the settings.
